fillmein's word list and the figures beside each word are built from other people's generous work. Thank you to all of them.
The word list and its scores
- Peter Broda's scored word list (peterbroda.me), July 2023: the words the list is drawn from. The scores are our team's own.
- wordfreq by Robyn Speer (github.com/rspeer/wordfreq), shared under CC BY-SA 4.0: how familiar each word is in everyday English, the Familiar figure.
Facts about each word
- New York Times answers, 2000 to 2023: how often the Times has used an answer, and the last year it did, counted by our team. Only the counts are kept, never a clue.
- Wiktionary (wiktionary.org), as extracted by kaikki.org, shared under CC BY-SA 4.0: the definitions shown for a word, and what kind of word it is.
- Google Books Ngrams (books.google.com/ngrams), shared under CC BY 3.0: how often books used a word.
- English Wikipedia's article titles (wikipedia.org, CC BY-SA 4.0): whether a word or phrase has an article.
Lookups
Links on word pages open XWord Info, Crossword Tracker, OneLook and Wiktionary, which keep their own clues and definitions.
Sharing the word data
Because parts of it come from sources shared under CC BY-SA, the word data fillmein builds from them (the word list, its scores and the figures beside each word) is shared under the same licence, CC BY-SA 4.0, with credit to the sources above.
